CHP leader Özgür Özel's statement after İmamoğlu's hearing: "That danger has been eliminated..."

Ekrem İmamoğlu , the imprisoned former Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), who was suspended from his post, was on trial for allegedly threatening Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek and his family during a panel discussion. He was sentenced to a total of 1 year and 8 months in prison on two counts, and acquitted on one count. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel , who attended the hearing, visited Ekrem İmamoğlu and other mayors currently in custody in Silivri. Following the visit, Özel made a statement in front of the Silivri Penal Institutions.
Targeting Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek, Özel said, "You're collapsing into 60-year-old companies founded by everyone's mother and father. Don't you violate people's rights? How will you be held accountable? One day you'll come and beg for your life, but God won't take it. Can you put the people through this? We don't care about anyone's hair or hair. You'll burn up as much space as you can by telling anyone who comes and goes, 'Your party chairman did this, I'll treat you badly.' There's a limit to everything. One day, I'll come out and tell you, point by point, and let's see if you can look your children in the face. What did you think? Am I supposed to leave my friends' honor and dignity to you? We didn't steal, we didn't let them steal, we didn't let them be beaten. In the end, innocence will be revealed. It turns out that Ahmet Özer has been lying here for 260 days for nothing."
Continuing his private statements, he said, "If he receives a hefty sentence for threatening and is upheld on appeal, a political ban could be imposed very quickly. Since the sentence was a two-month, 15-day sentence, which doesn't fall within the political ban threshold, that risk is eliminated. Therefore, they can't have this decision upheld on appeal in a few months and impose a political ban. They imposed a sentence of over two years for another crime, and there are still things that won't be finalized until the election."
